I stared at the ceiling and tried to mimic Mel’s rhythmic breathing beside me. Her steady exhales were a good model. My alarm was two minutes from going off, and I was already wide awake, lungs burning like I just got off the treadmill.

Breakfast, card, car, delivery, email, car, late—god, she’s gonna be so pissed.

I grinned. This was either the greatest idea of my life, or the most colossal f**kup any man had ever pulled.

The alarm went off, and I rolled out of bed. Time to find out.
